Project Management: Najat Hassan,&nbsp;Creative Direction: Louise MackieDesign Direction: Jean Colangel,&nbsp;3D Design: Binh Nguyen, Clinton Olajide Jr.,&nbsp;Production Support: Zach Schmid,&nbsp;Design Engineering: Carl Burdick,&nbsp;Fabrication: Scott Chamberlain

ZGF and Wexford Science + Technology partnered with the University of California, Davis to design and build a hub adjacent to the Sacramento medical campus where higher education, industry, and government can come together for the betterment of the community. The result is Aggie Square: an innovation district and ecosystem where companies, researchers, students, and faculty work side-by-side with the common goal of accelerating discovery.

Our team was brought in alongside ZGF Architects to strategize Wexford’s art experience. The objective was to create intentional moments of impact that connect the local Sacramento landscape and culture with the innovation of the students and scientists on campus. My role was in determining art locations, conceptualizing and leading the design and fabrication of the lobby’s hero sculpture, and serving on the Sacramento Arts Commission to select local artists for murals throughout the space. The design of the lobby’s hero sculpture, Data Delta, honors the convergence of the Sacramento River and its surrounding landscape–a constant flow of change. The polycarbonate forms are derived from the area’s topography, and the spray-painted color maps the local land use. Woven seed patterns of agricultural data are stencil-painted through the gradient. Strategically placed spines on each panel juxtapose the fluidity and geometry of the land and ensure the panels do not warp over time.
Suspended metal droplets quantify the rivers and tributaries of the region and create an ascent between the first and second floors. The path of the river itself weaves through the panels as the reflective centerpiece for Data Delta.

Through a robust R&amp;D phase, I led the collaboration with the printers, fabricators, and mural operations department to execute the conceptual design intent. The first iteration of the sculpture hypothesized if print could be used to execute clean gradients at cost. After rounds of sampling, we determined a painted approach would offer a more vibrant color execution and stronger human touch.I also had the priviledge to serve on the Sacramento Arts Commission Open Call panel for the campus. Working with local artists, project executives, and the board, we selected a series of muralists to bring a hyper-local perspective to Aggie Square.

Gradient Canopy is one of the first times Google led the concept and construction of its own campus. Our team led the experience design, curated, and supported the making of the buildings art collection feauring over 30 local artists.
The collection embodies the project’s priority for sustainability and biodiversity, featuring artists and activists who integrate nature into their process, motifs, and themes. My role included experience design, creating environmental graphics, artist research and curation, briefing, developing accessible interpretive text, curatorial narratives, artist statements, and exhibition copy for physical signage and a digital platform.

Throughout the process of creating the collection, I had the privilege of joining artists in their studios to document their process and intention. Below are some behind-the-scenes studio visits with the artists.

Haoyun Erin Zhao

Born in China and relocating to the United States at seventeen, Haoyun Erin Zhao established her multidisciplinary practice in San Francisco, primarily working in painting, printmaking, and installation. For Gradient Canopy, Erin painted two large-format dyptychs, titled&nbsp;Melodic Bay&nbsp;and&nbsp;Oceanic Caligraphy,&nbsp;to be positioned at opposite ends of the building, drawing&nbsp;visitors through the building to see work inspired by different regional biomes.

<img width="7896" height="5267" width_o="7896" height_o="5267" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3fdd1cba3a967e01007ccc13eaa3d521e3ccc82814e9b45d031006f6652f4234/Erin_8.jpg" data-mid="229612970" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3fdd1cba3a967e01007ccc13eaa3d521e3ccc82814e9b45d031006f6652f4234/Erin_8.jpg" />Zhao’s practice exists at the intersection of Eastern and Western philosophies, exploring how color, form, and symbol accrue layered meanings through cultural context and personal experience. Informed by early training in calligraphy and ink painting and later engagement with Western art and philosophy, her work reflects a sustained inquiry into the essence of things, the fluidity of meaning, and the challenge of rendering the intangible perceptible. From this foundation, she draws recurring motifs from nature, including birds, wings, and plants, as well as elemental and intangible forces such as water, fire, wind, and Qi (energy). Through translucency, gradients, and calligraphic gestures, forms overlap, dissolve, and re-emerge, embodying interconnectedness and continual transformation.

Carolynn Haydu

Classically trained in drawing and painting, Haydu ultimately fell in love with the paper substrate on which she was mark-making.

Haydu’s unique works reflect the ecstatic energies she experiences in the open spaces of her California home, as well as the repeating patterns that occur naturally in everything from waves to rock formations. Her finished works evoke the energetic topographies of the outdoor spaces she holds dear.
For Gradient Canopy, Carolynn worked with the SPMD team to fabricate her layers in CNC-cut wooden canvases for her to apply her techniques.

Dana Hemenway

Dana Hemenway is an artist based in San Francisco. Her work is rooted in the excavation and elevation of utilitarian objects to make visible what has become habituated in our built environments. Hemenway uses these functional items as materials to form traditionally fiber-based crafts–– lights and cords are woven through ceramics or the gallery wall, extension cords are transformed into macramé chains. Her light installation follows the estuary environments near the Gradient Canopy project site.

Favianna Rodriguez Giannoni

Favianna Rodriguez Giannoni is an interdisciplinary artist, cultural strategist, and entrepreneur based in Oakland, California. Her art and praxis address migration, gender justice, climate change, racial equity, and sexual freedom. Her work centers joy and healing, while challenging entrenched myths and dominant cultural practices. Favianna's creative practice serves as a record of her human experiences as a woman of color embracing pleasure and womb healing through creative expression and personal transformation. Her signature mark-making embodies the perspective of a first-generation American Latinx artist with Afro-Latinx roots who grew up in Oakland, California during the era of the war on drugs and the birth of Hip Hop.
For the project, Favianna and the SPMD team translated her paper collage techniques into a large-scale wheatpaste application celebrating the bay.

Nicole Mueller

Nicole Mueller is a visual artist and painter based in San Francisco, CA. Her paintings are vibrant and lyrical, both process-driven and organic explorations of self and sentience. Built from an abstract visual language, they become profound explorations into personal psychology, driven by impulse, intuition, and feeling. Mueller combines influences from memories of things like animated films from her childhood and a heightened awareness of her body in the present moment, manifested through intuitive gestures that reveal a complex and dramatic interiority.

For the project, Nicole painted two large-scale canvases inspired by the California redwoods and foothills, to be positioned at opposite ends of the building, encouraging visitors to traverse the series.

At Google’s Tasman Campus is a three-building, 674,000 sf campus located in San Jose, California, our team was brought in to improve the user experience by creating an exterior signage system. Our objective was to develop a minimal, future-proof signage system that infused moments of Google’s playful brand tone. The result is a comprehensive wayfinding system complete with campus directionals, vehicle directionals, and destination IDs, offering brand-level, mid-level, and detailed-level information to help users navigate.
Our exterior signage system assigns one of the brand color’s to each building to create recognizable landmarks. We chose to extend the architecture with colored archways and round iconography articulating the building name and reinforcing campus identity.

Netflix House is a new, permanent physical entertainment venue where fans can experience popular Netflix shows and movies. Our team worked on the commissioning team for the grand entries to the space. We supported local artist Jeremy Biggers in the design process and execution of the mural. As a part of that support, I directed the creation of a short documentary on his practice and process.Documentary coming soon.

The team at GHD designed and implemented graphics and wayfinding across a 1.4-million-square-foot technology headquarters. The design scheme of this floor plate moves between light and shadow. The two themes run east to west, orienting the users with subtle transitions. On the east end, Grand Central Station windows emerge as refracting geometry from the elevator doors. Firescape shadows cap the west side, mimicking the character of the streetscape.

In the adjacent elevator lobby, I used shadow play to mimic the fire escapes of New York apartment buildings.

The Bluffs is a workspace designed to reflect the maker culture and natural diversity of Southern California.
In the central work lounge, a weaving installation provides a visual accent, a branded connection, and a nod to local rhythms. The woven and painted forms work together to form an abstract mapping of the sun’s movement on the day the brand was founded.

Throughout the workplace, a system of painted murals offers colored wayfinding cues and atmospheric texture. Each color zone embodies a different ecosystem in Southern California, while local flora and fauna are celebrated with drawings one might jot down in their sketchbook while on a hike.

Seven Magazine breaks out of the rigidity of corporate systems, allowing our creative processes to evolve as we do. Issue one offered a chance to learn more about our shared emotional experiences by stopping to ask a few questions of ourselves and the world around us.

The conversations dove into the individual projects they were each working on and their perspectives on authenticity, community, and balance.
