Our team led the experience design, curation, and fabrication of the art and design collection feauring over 30 local artist commissions. The collection embodies Google’s priority for sustainability and biodiversity, featuring artists and activists who integrate nature into their work. Haydu’s unique works reflect the ecstatic energies she experiences in the open spaces of her California home, as well as the repeating patterns that occur naturally in everything from waves to rock formations. Her finished works evoke the energetic topographies of the outdoor spaces she holds dear. Raised by his mother, a fashion designer who immigrated from Trinidad and Tobago, Coverdale's earliest understanding of making came through textiles, pattern, and construction.I began working with Coverdale in 2023 as we spoke about his movement between fashion and art over the last ten years. His practice is inspired by the blue-collar community that raised him, creating an approach rooted in a deep respect for hands-on labor where thinking comes through the making. Construction workers, welders, production linemen, and other skilled trades exemplified a way of working built on routine and repetition. Extending the language of cut-out into three dimensions, the bench explores weight, void, and the movement of shadow as another composition entirely. Its geometry originates in a series of freehand painted panels that were later translated into steel. Rather than concealing the construction process, the exposed welds and laser-cut paths remain visible allow the steel to behave like steel. Each structural adjustment along the way becomes a part of the final work. Polycarbonate topography is spray-painted with gradient and pattern that maps local agriculture. Suspended metal droplets move between the panels to quantify tributaries while also creating an ascent between floors. For the second issue, our approach included an open call to artists around the globe. We identified themes throughout the 1,200 submissions that represent a collective response to our recent history and present culture.
